چکیده
Follow-up radiographs of the distal radius revealed consolidation of the grafted bone and hydroxyapatite, and no recurrence of the lesion (Fig 2). A brown tumour presents with areas of radiolucency particularly in the facial bones, pelvis, ribs and femur (Doğan et al., 2004). Our patient had an unusual location of this disorder although this has been documented before (Resnick, 1974). As usual, the diagnosis of brown tumour, giant cell tumour, giant cell reparative granuloma and aneurysmal bone cyst must be considered and radiographic features do not help to distinguish between these diagnoses. A raised serum calcium and PTH and a decrease in BMD suggest a brown tumour with PTHT with successful parathyroidectomy improving the lesions (Agarwal et al., 2002; Doğan et al., 2004; Raeburn et al., 2002). However, curettage and bone graft could be considered for persistent symptoms after parathyroidectomy.

Calcimimetics versus parathyroidectomy for treatment of primary hyperparathyroidism: retrospective chart analysis of a prospective database.
OBJECTIVE This study aims to determine the efficacy of calcimimetics in improving bone mineral density (BMD) in patients with primary hyperparathyroidism (pHPT) and compare those results to patients undergoing parathyroidectomy. BACKGROUND Parathyroidectomy has been shown to improve BMD in pHPT, but calcimimetics have recently been advocated as a medical alternative to parathyroidectomy for p...
متن کاملMultiple brown tumours of tertiary hyperparathyroidism in a renal transplant recipient: a case report.
Tertiary Hyperparathyroidism (HPT) is an uncommon condition that affects patients with secondary HPT after a successful kidney transplant. Bone alterations are the main consequences of this endocrine condition, including the development of an osteolytic lesion called brown tumour. This paper reports an unusual case of multiple brown tumours located in the maxilla and mandible in a 58-year-old r...
متن کاملAn Uncommon Case of Persistent Hypercalcaemia following Parathyroid Surgery
Primary hyperparathyroidism is present in approximately 1 in 500 people and occurs predominantly in post-menopausal women. The condition occurs in approximately 85% cases as adenoma, 14% cases as Parathyroid Hyperplasia and in 1% cases as Parathyroid Carcinoma (1) . Rarely it can occur as part of MEN (Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia) Type 1 and Type 2a and Familial Hyperparathyroidism. There is al...
متن کاملNormocalcemic parathormone elevation after successful parathyroidectomy: long-term analysis of parathormone variations over 10 years.
BACKGROUND The long-term significance of normocalcemic parathormone elevation (NPE) after successful parathyroidectomy for sporadic primary hyperparathyroidism remains unclear. METHOD Of 239 consecutive patients who underwent targeted parathyroidectomy with intraoperative parathormone monitoring, 96 were followed for ≥ 10 years. NPE was defined as a normal serum calcium level and parathormone...
متن کاملDisappearing hypercalcaemia.
Four women presented with symptomatic hypercalcaemia and raised concentrations of serum parathyroid hormone (PTH). In each case, serum calcium returned spontaneously to normal. In two patients serum PTH also fell to the normal range and biochemical relapse has not occurred despite prolonged follow-up. In the others, serum PTH remained elevated and subsequent symptomatic hypercalcaemia necessita...
